摘要

A two-year-old girl can distinguish a pelican from a grey heron but cannot distinguish red from green or a traffic light from a lamppost. This sounds obvious: most children prefer animals above traffic lights. However, we can wonder whether this really makes sense. Her chance of surviving nowadays would be greater if she could distinguish the latter two and know when to stop and avoid traffic compared to knowing names of animals that will never harm her. Brain capacities needed to survive as hunters and gatherers are not needed for life nowadays. According to Darwin (1859)'s theory, our species brain might slowly update to a version suited for modern time and environment.
