World over,concern for environment,reduction in dependence on imported oil import and energy security are the three driving forces which are shaping the pattern of technology development in the transportation industry which is the single largest consumer of fossil energy.India currently imports about 72% of its petroleum requirements.This import is likely to go up to almost 92 % by the year 2015 based on the current rate of discovery of new domestic sources.In such a scenario where the world petroleum prices are already touching U.S 65 a barrel,the importance of research on alternate fuels for internal combustion engines needs no emphasis.
