A study was made in Gossypium hirsutum L. to assess the nature and extent of heterosis in 48 hybrids deriuedjrom 10 parental lines based on cytoplasmic male sterility and conventional system. Forty-eight hybrids and their parents were used to estimatethe heterosis for 12 traits including seed cotton yield. Based on heterosis and per se performance, superior crosses were identified/or each trait Heterosis for yield was generally accompanied by heterosis for component traits. Heterosis to the extent of 38 and 29 per cent was observed/or seed cotton yield in CMS (Aridum) and CMS (Harknessii) system as against 54 per cent in conventional system. Cross PH 93 x G cot 10, PH 93 x Swat dwarf and LRK 516 x Line 203 were the most heterotic and high yieldinghybrids in all the three methods.
