Polyaromatic hydrocarbons discharged together with the combustion products of hydrocarbon fuels jointly with nitrogen oxides are capable of synthesizing nitrocarcinogenic compounds which possess mutagenic properties and which are very harmful to man. The carcinogenic activity of polyaromatic hydrocarbons is also sharply enhanced upon joint interaction with solid (soot) particles and sulfur oxides. The most hazardous soot particles are those with an average diameter of 0.3-1 mum, on which polyaromatic hydrocarbons are predominantly sorbed. The emissions of PAH_i, SIGMA PAH_i and SIGMA PAH? with exhaust gases of the internal combustion engines studied and also the index SIGMA CA_((eg)) correlate, with a rather high accuracy, with mass emissions of benzo[a]pyrene. Correlational relations were derived for the content of harmful compounds in exhaust gases versus the content of benzo[a]pyrene.
