In 1997 there became effective GOST R 50921-96 "Coal coke with a lump size of 20 mm and larger. A method of determination of coke strength after reaction with carbon dioxide", which was worked out and presented by the Eastern Research Institute of Coal Chemistry (VUKhIN). Let us consider its content and discuss it.In the West-Siberian Metallurgical Plant in 1994 a method of determination of coke strength after reaction was developed and applied. Since 1995 it has been used in the plant control system.* The method was based on the method of the firm Nippon Steel, which is widely applied all over the world and which has been described in detail in the literature. The workers of the plant worked out the method with account taken of the plant's specific features and possibilities. The main objective was to obtain additional, more objective qualitative characteristics of the blast-furnace lump fuel than those provided by conventional mechanical tests. The setup designed and built was tested and has been operated for five years. Hence, all the comments and propositions offered in this paper are based on the practical experience of the author.
