For many years industry has focused on detail - optimising aspects of the automation and control system, and introducing specific controls for quality and environmental aspects. However, if you are standing at a plant and you know there is sporadic toxic gas leak some-where, becoming dangerous and the area air-polluted, the concern of breathing and the rest comes to your mind. You could think how simple it would be if you could just see the gas. The good news is that now you can. Sperosens , a gas detection and environmental monitoring company, has recently been appointed by ATIS as the sole distributors for the SPIM in South Africa. Atis is an international French company, established in 1995, specialising in spectral imaging. Atis found a way whereby a cheaper, industry-standard, ambient temperature-rated infrared image sensor could be used. This device, known as a spectral passive infrared monitor (SPIM), is essentially a cost efficient chemical agent remote cloud sensor.
