Locally advanced rectal cancer: new findings in anticancer therapy

Rectal cancer accounts for nearly a third of colorectal cancer cases, with a mortality of 4-10 cases per 100,000 per year, thus accounting for 9% of cancer deaths both in males and in females in western countries. Management of locally advanced rectal cancer has undergone and continues to undergo significant progress in the last two decades: in particular, new multimodality strategies have contributed to marked improvements in terms of reduction of both local and distant recurrence rates. This review focuses and summarizes the effectiveness of multimodality approaches in the standard treatment programs for locally advanced rectal cancer and also discusses the ongoing research to improve these regimens.
