This study was carried out to estimate beneficial effects of water extracts of the medicinal plants Oenanthe javanica (MNR), Coicis lachryma-jobi L. (YM) and Plantaginis asiatica L. (CJJ) on activities of key enzymes (including lipoprotein lipase (LPL), acyl-CoA synthetase (ACS) and carnitine acetyltransferase (CAT)) on lipid metabolism. LPL and ACS were extracted from the epididymal adipose tissue and liver of Zucker lean rats (lean) and Zucker fat rats (fa/fa). Treatment with MNR or YM extracts significantly reduced the activity of lean and fa/fa rats LPL. 10 000 ppm of MNR, YM and CJJ extracts decreased fa/fa rats LPL activity by 32.5%, 30.1% and 22.8%, respectively. ACS activity was significantly higher in YM extract treated lean rats compared to the control; MNR extract significantly increased the activity of ACS in the fa/fa rats, compared to the activity in the control (P < 0.05). MNR extract activated fa/fa rats ACS activity by 12x compared with control at 10 000 ppm concn. CAT activity was significantly higher in the 10 000 ppm and 20 000 ppm CJJ extract treated rats than in the control. It is concluded that MNR, YM and CJJ extracts may have beneficial effects due to the activities of enzymes related to fat metabolism in obese humans.
