Smart Goggles for the Drowsiness Detection to Avoid the Vehicle Accidents

In recent years the driver drowsiness has been a major factor in the road accidents leading to injuries, deaths and economic losses. The majority of the literature revealed that several parameters such as subjective measures, behavioural measures, physiological measures and vehicle parameters give the driver alertness. Many of the consumer appliances such as electronic gadgets, automotive devices, and medical devices use IR sensors because of the ease of operation, sensitivity, and lack of radiation effects. This study focuses the application of IR sensors for the development of a device for the driver's drowsiness detection system. The prototype design uses a microcontroller-based IR transmitter and receiver circuit to detect the Eye blink of the subject who is under driving condition on a high-fidelity driving simulator. The IR sensors have been arranged horizontally in Goggles to make it non-intrusive, and the blink pattern of the subject continuously monitored and recorded fed to the PC through Max 232 port for further analysis in MATLAB. The prototype designed is calibrated and tested against the Standard Data acquisition system from the AD Instruments. The data recorded on 25 subjects under active and drowsy conditions on a high-fidelity driving simulator and analysed by using MATLAB to determine the parameters such as Blink to Blink interval, Blink rate. The analysis shows that the blink rate and the blink to blink interval can give vital information about the vigilance state of the subject.
