Design and Development of a ZigBee Based Wireless Sensor Network for Agricultural Parameters Monitoring

This paper presents design and developmental aspects of a ZigBee based Cost-Effective Wireless Sensor Network for Agricultural Parameters Monitoring. The developed system mainly consists of ZigBee-PRO based measurement nodes and parameter monitoring node (base station). ZigBee-PRO modules used in the system provide cost-effective wireless connectivity to devices in ZigBee star and mesh networks. The measurement node is a wireless sensor node which includes a ZigBee transceiver, air temperature, relative humidity, and pressure sensors, associated signal conditioners, and required interface circuits. The parameter monitoring base station consists of a ZigBee transceiver module connected via a USB interface to a Microsoft Windows based Host Computer installed with LahVIEW. The measurement nodes collect the value of the agricultural parameters and send them wirelessly to the parameter monitoring base station. A LabVIEW based application software is developed on the base station host computer to receive, process, and present the parameter measurements on a graphical chart and to save data in the computer hard disc for post processing.
