In this article, a possible way of evaluating the tread pattern design feature from the hydroplaning point of view is discussed. An apparatus to measure the water dispersal characteristics of tread patterns has been designed, developed and thereafter tread patterns evaluated. Pattern, which is to drain out the maximum amount of water from under surface of tyre, has been regarded as best for wet traction performance. Using this ideology, three different types of tyre tread pattern designs have been evaluated and compared. The entire study has been done in laboratory and eliminates the necessity of road tests which are both costly and time consuming.
