Safety Chamber - a Tool for safe Refuge during Emergency in Mines

Accident and disaster are inherent problems in coal mines. The causes of these are generally inundation, fire, explosion or sudden strata collapse. In addition to conventional measures adopted for prevention/control of accidents/disaster in mines, safety chamber may prove a useful tool to provide safe refuge to persons deployed below ground during occurrence of such mishaps. In this article, reviews of different types of safety chambers/refuge bay used in coal mines have been made. Essential design requirements of a safety chamber including design of its door have also been discussed in this article.
