Nitrogen and Climate Change: Interactions, Impacts, Mitigation and Adaptation

I feel greatly hounoured and privileged to deliver the 4th Prof. S.K. Mukherjee Memorial Lecture at Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. It is a very memorable occasion for me, firstly because I have the honour of delivering the lecture in the memory of Prof. S.K. Mukherjee, a doyen of Soil Science; secondly I have been invited by my alma mater, thirdly that alma mater is none other than the world famous Banaras Hindu University; and finally I have the privilege ofvisiting the ancient, holy city of Varanasi. Prof. Mukherjee, a renowned soil scientist, worked on diverse fields of Soil and Physical Chemistry. His contributions in colloid chemistry and electro-chemical properties of soil are unparallel. He served asVice Chancellor, Kalyani University and Calcutta University and was closely associated with several scientific organizations including Indian Society of Soil Science, Indian Science Congress Association and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences. I pay my homage to this legendary Soil Scientist and present this lecture on 'Nitrogen and Climate Change' in his memory.
