Industrial effluents and wastewaters are used as source of irrigation in agriculture in view of ever increasing demand for irrigation water supply (Van der Hoek 2001; Droogers 2002). The total wastewater generated from all major industrial sources ofIndia is about 83048 MLD (Biswas 2003). Soils are considered to be the ultimate and probably the most logical sink for such waters particularly in areas where their disposal has become a real problem. As majority of the industrial effluents do contain important nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus and also organic matter, farmers use such waters with a view to condition their farmlands and for meeting partial irrigation requirement of crops. However, such effluents have to be dealt with utmost care and attention in view of their reported detrimental effects in certain cases.
