Nutrient management practices for sustaining groundnut yield and soil productivity on sandy loam soils.

A field experiment was conducted for five successive years (2005 to 2009) at Dry Farming Research Station, Junagadh Agricultural University, Jamkhambhalia, Gujarat, India, under rainfed conditions to generate integrated nutrient management module for groundnut for sustainable production in sandy loam soils of North Suarashtra agro-climatic zone of Gujarat. Twelve treatment combinations were: absolute control (T1); recommended dose of fertilizers (12.5:25.0 kg NP/ha) (T2); T2 + 40 kg K2O/ha (T3); T2 + 500 kg gypsum/ha (T4); T2 + 10 kg zinc sulfate/ha (T5); T2 + spraying 1.0% ferrous sulfate at 45 and 55 DAS (T6); T2 + 5 kg borax/ha (T7); T2 + inoculation (Rhizobium + PSM each of 1 kg/ha) (T8); 50% of T2 + vermicompost 2.0 t/ha (T9); 50% of T2 + 500 kg castor cake/ha (T10); 2.0 t vermicompost/ha + 500 kg castor cake/ha + inoculation (Rhizobium and PSM each of 1 kg/ha) (T11); and T2 + 20 kg K2O/ha (T12). Significantly highest pod (1.43 t/ha) and haulm (2.62 t/ha) yields, net realization of Rs. 35 326/ha and B:C of 3.33 were recorded with T10 treatment, while the lowest values were recorded with T1. Treatment T10 also recorded the maximum uptake of N, P and K with 99.3, 7.8 and 50.2 kg/ha, respectively. The application of 50% RDF (6.25:12.50 NP kg/ha) along with 500 kg castor cake/ha to groundnut produced highest yield and net realization. For organic cultivation of groundnut under rainfed condition, application of 2.0 t vermicompost/ha and 500 kg castor cake along with inoculation of Rhizobium + PSM at 1 kg/ha each will be beneficial.
