Dimensions of Regional Disparities in Socio-Economic Development of Assam

The status of development of different districts of Assam has been estimated with the help of composite index based on optimum combination of forty-eight developmental indicators. The data on various socio-economic indicators of the year 2001 for different districts have been used in the study, The level of development is separately estimated for agricultural sector, industrial sector, infrastructural facilities and overall socio-economic sectors. The district of Sonitpur is found to rank first and the district of NC Hills is on the last position in the overall socio-economic development. There is positive significant association between the levels of development in agriculture and socio-economic fields. Wide disparities in the levels of developmenthave been observed in different districts of the State. For bringing about uniform regional development in the State, model districts have been identified and potential targets for various indicators have been estimated for low developed districts.
