A HARD-HATTED MINE SURVEYOR AS A TIN-HATTED ARMY SURVEYOR IN WORLD WAR II

Many members will have made use of the book entitled South African Mine Valuation written by one Clare Storrar. Mr Storrar has spent the last thirty years of his retirement with his wife in Mossel Bay. He has, during this period of time, developed a protea farm near Plettenberg Bay, written a biography of the Frenchman, Henry Georges Fourcade. Henry Fourcade was famous for inventing stereophotogrammetry and as far back as 1904, produced an accurate contour map of Devil's Peak, Cape Town, from two photographs taken at the ends of a baseline on Signal Hill. Clare also edited and published the 19th Century diary of the Plettenberg Bay Harbour Master. He has also put pen to paper to produce some very personal memoirs for his family. One of these is an n account of his unusual adventures and reactions as a military surveyor with the 8th Army in the Western Desert 1941-1942. Clare has very kindly allowed us to reproduce his recollections here for our member's enjoyment.
