On the scope and limitations of the Heck reaction of upper rim tetraiodocalix [4] arenes

Upper rim substituted tetraiodocalix [4] arenes are coupled to a variety of olefins using the palladium catalysed Heck reaction. Tetraolefinic upper rim substituted calix [4]arenes are obtained in good yields. All of the olefins are coupled with exceptionally high stereoselectivity to produce the all-(E)isomers. The optimisation of reaction conditions as well as the scope and limitation of the reaction with respect to avariety of olefins are discussed.
