The oxidative carbonylation of styrene has been achieved in MeOH with known and new palladium(II) catalysts of general formulae [Pd(P-P)(MeCN)_2][PF_6]_2, [Pd(P-P)(bipy)][PF_6]_2,Pd(P-P)(OAc)_2, [Pd_2(cyclo-tetraphos)(MeCN)_4][PF_6]_4, [Pd_2(cyclo-tetraphos)(bipy)_2][PF_6]_4, Pd_2(cyclo-tetraphos)(OAc)_4 (P-P = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane), meso-2,3-bis(diphenylphosino)butane or rac-2,3-bis(diphenylphosino)butane; cyclo-tetraphos = cis, trans, cis-1,2,3,4-tetrakis(diphenylphosphino)cyclobutane; bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine; OAc = acetate).
