The first symmetrical tetrarheniumcyclodiyne type cluster containing phosphine ligands: Re_4(#mu#-O)_4Cl_4(P(C_6H_4OMe-p)_3)_4

The reactions of methanol solutions of cis-Re_2(#mu#-O_2-CCH_3)_2Cl_4(H_2O)_2 with PAr_3 (Ar = Ph, C_6H_4Me-p, C_6H_4Me-m or C_6H_4Cl-p) afford the quadruply bonded dirhenium (IV, II) complexes Cl_2(MeO)_2ReReCl_2(PAr_3)_2, whereas P(C_6H_4OMe-p)_3 gives the complex Re_4(#mu#-O)_4-Cl_4[P(C_6H_4OMe-p)_3]_4, which X-ray crystallography has shown is the first symmetrical, neutral, tetrarhenium-cyclodiyne type cluster containing phosphine ligands.
