Treatment of Bowen's disease with photodynamic therapy after Imiquimod: the need for controlled trials.

Bowen's disease (squamous cell carcinoma in situ) presents as an either solitary or multiple well-demarcated red and scaly plaque in about 10-20% of patients. This lesion frequently has an indolent local evolution but may sometimes progress to invasive squamous cell carcinoma. The lesion most commonly develops on sun-exposed areas of white, fair-skinned elderly patients. Chronic exposure to arsenic, and high-risk oncogenic HPV-16 have also been associated with Bowen's disease.
