Authors' response: Of founding fathers and history

Balazs and Reynold's (2013) response to Abi-Rached's (2012) history of the early years of the Brain Research Association/British Neuroscience Association and our reply to them (Abi-Rached & Rose 2013) provide an instructive demonstration of the weaknesses as well as the strengths of oral history. Their account contradicts that of three original members of the Black Horse group: Bachelard, Lagnado, and Rose. To the best of the latter's recollection, Reynolds was not involved. Balazs was because Rose invited him to join the venture. We understand Balazs' wish to honor Richter, as it was Richter who found him a research position when he fled Hungary. In our view, Abi-Rached's original article does pay appropriate respect to one who was a pioneer in the infant field of neurochemistry. Sufficient unto the day . . .
