Dental whitening using 532/ 1064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers.

In dermatological practices, pigmentary disorders are treated with various kinds of bleaching agents and lasers, including the 532/1064-nm Q-switched NdtYAG laser (QSNY). As much as many people desire brighter skin, they also want to have whiter, brighter teeth, and for this reason, dental whitening has become a common treatment.We obtained two extracted teeth that were removed to facilitate the straightening of irregular teeth; they contained no active disease. The teeth were cleansed with sodium hypochlorite after the extraction and then stored at room temperature for 3 weeks to exclude any tooth whitening effects due to the natural course of dehydration. We performed QSNY (Spectra VRMII, Lutronic, Korea) on one tooth (Fig. la) with settings of 1064 nm, 6 J/cm~2 and a pulse width of 5-7 ns using a 4-mm hand-piece (Fig. lb). Subsequent treatment was performed with settings of 532 nm, 1.2 J/cm~2 using a 4-mm hand-piece (Fig. lc). At each setting, two passes were delivered with an appropriate overlap. An additional session of 1064/532-nm QSNY with the same settings described above was performed 1 week after the first treatment (Fig. 1d).
