摘要

Assisted living (AL) is the fastest growing residential option for older adults whose needs cannot be safely and adequately met if they continue to live on their own or in retirement or independent-living communities, but who do not require continuous, skilled nursing and medical care as is provided in nursing homes. Known by a variety of names (eg, residential care, housing with services, board and care), what began as a social model of supportive and recreational services is morphing into one where health as well as personal care services appear to be driving the "medicalization" of assisted living.
