Frailty is rapidly becoming a simple way to recognize those older persons who can benefit from seeing a geriatrician. Frailty in its broadest sense identifies vulnerable persons who when exposed to a stressor are very likely to develop disability or to die. In one study, 25% of persons in nursing homes had severe frailty. In nursing homes, frailty is associated with new-onset disability and mortality. Adverse outcomes are more common in frail persons who have cognitive impairment.
