Human herpes virus 6 encephalitis in immunocompetent patient: An unusual neuroradiological presentation

Human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6), the causal agent of rubeola infantum, infects almost all children by 2 years of age. HHV-6 has been associated with encephalitis during primary infection in children and during reactivation in immunocompro-mised individuals [1,2]; whereas encephalitis due to HHV-6 in immunocompetent adults has been rarely reported, and is more controversial [3]. Here, we describe an immunocompetent 40-year old male patient with encephalitis due to HHV-6 with an unusual neuro-radiological presentation. We also describe perfusion weighted imaging findings, obtained with a first pass dynamic susceptibility weighted contrast enhanced MR (DSC-MR) technique, of this uncommon entity.
