Application and Analysis of Winglets for the Wind Turbine

Winglets are generally used in aircraft and are applied to reduce the tip vortex of the wing. A small wing is designed at the wing tip in recent years, the first reason is that it can enhance the aerodynamic characters of wind, and the second one is that it can reduce the fuel costs. In this study, the winglets are used in the blade of wing turbine to increase the efficiency of the turbine. It will increase the power of the turbine and reduce the vortex at the blade tip. The relations between the stall effect and the winglets are studied. In this study, application of Blade Calculator in designing 2-D cross-section of the blade, then CAD software is used to create 3-D model. The ANSYSY-CFX software is used to perform the CFD analysis for the blade to get the velocity distribution and the torque to understand the effect of the winglets. Analytical results showed that three designs with and without winglet didn't increase the torques significantly, but the blade design with winglet can improve the stall effect. The rotating speed of the stall for the wing with non-winglet is between 40-50rpm, and that for the blade with airplane winglet is between 45-50rpm, and for the blade with 1200 winglet is between 60-70rpm. It showed that winglet can reduce the vortex and delay the occurrence time of the stall. It is a method to increase the aerodynamic effect of the blade of wind turbine.
