In view of applications in geometric representation theory in positive characteristic, we introduce parity sheaves, a class of constructible complexes of sheaves on stratified varieties whose strata satisfy a cohomological parity vanishing condition. We show the existence and uniqueness of parity sheaves on several spaces arising in representation theory, including generalised flag varieties, nilpotent cones (at least for GL_n) and toric varieties.
