Diversity and floristic composition of the vascular plants in the forest fragment in southeastern Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The diversity and floristic composition of the vascular plants of the Morro Alto Mourao, within the Serra da Tiririca State Park, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil (22 degrees 58' 04 '' S x 43 degrees 01' 17 '' W), were analyzed. The study area includes an important fragment of montane forest within the Atlantic Coastal Forest biome. A total of 369 taxa were collected, including 7 Pteridophytes, 295 Dicotyledons, and 67 Monocatyledons, belonging to 84 different families. These plants are distributed among three life-forms: arboreal, shrub-arboreal, and herbaceous. A map of the area, a graphic representation of the local water balance, plant profiles, soil analyses and descriptions of the climates of the eastern and western facing slopes of the Serra do Tiririca Mountains are presented. Rare or endangered and endemic species are indicated. A list of the taxa is also provided that cites flowering and fruiting, habit descriptions in addition to the name of the collectors.
