Delirium caused by urinary retention in elderly people: a case report and literature review on the 'cystocerebral syndrome'.

Parkinson's disease is one of the most common causes of disability in older people. The incidence rises with age and is greatest in the eighth decade of life. A recent systematic review by Twelves et al. demonstrated that the described incidence varied depending on the criteria used for diagnosis and the design of studies; furthermore, most previous incidence studies were shown to have had significant flaws, resulting in the age of peak incidence being underestimated. A more recent prospective pilot study on incidence, which used more-stringent diagnostic criteria, showed a higher overall incidence, as well as a higher mean age of diagnosis of 76.1. The population of patients with Parkinson's disease being treated with medications is better represented using age-specific prevalence rates. Age-specific prevalence per 100,000 population ranges from 277 to 508 in people aged 60 to 69, rising to between 613.7 to 1,727 in those aged 70 to 79, and -443.9 to 3,397.3 in those aged 80 and older.
