A critique of visual materials in 'Evidence for an occipito-temporal tract underlying visual recognition in picture naming'.

We read with interest the article "Evidence for an occipito-temporal tract underlying visual recognition in picture naming" by E. Mandonnet, P. Gatignol, and H. Duffau, published in Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery 111 (2009) 601 -605. We have a comment regarding the visual materials used to monitor cognitive functions during brain surgery. The authors report on a mistake made by a patient, calling mirror to the image of an arm-chair. The caption to Fig. 2b, states: "Pictures from the DO80. Naming errors during stimulations at the temporo-occipital junction were induced by impaired visual analysis. For example, the 'arm-chair' (Fig. 1) was named 'mirror,' probably because the patient was unable to recognize the arms in the picture, and the back of the arm-chair looked like a mirror" (p. 603).
