We applaud the recent efforts by Baird et al to characterize the leadership training programs in dermatology residency programs-an important topic that is too often overlooked. However, the article confuses the distinction between leadership and management skills. Although leadership and management skills are complementary, their origins and ultimate functions are different, and an understanding of these differences is essential in crafting effective leadership curricula in both residency programs and in medicine more broadly. The concept of management was developed at the start of the 20th century as a way to address complexity in organizations and to make them run efficiently and effectively.
