Auburn, Colorado State veterinary colleges turn 100 - Faculty, alumni mark the occasion by taking a look at the past and present

Veterinary colleges at two universities--Auburn and ColoradoState--have been celebrating theircentennials all year with a generousdose of history. Dr. Charles M. Hendrix, AVMA vicepresident and an Auburn professor,spoke about the milestone at Auburnwhen he delivered the commencement address for the class of 2007.Dr. Hendrix said Auburn established the first veterinary college inthe South. Dr. Charles Allen Caryfounded Auburn's Department ofVeterinary Science in 1892 andCollege of Veterinary Medicine in 1907.In 1907, Dr. Hendrix said, aveterinarian's salary as a milk inspector ranged from dollar1,600 to dollar2,000per year. The cost of establishing anew veterinary college was aboutdollar350,000. Yearly operating expenseswere about $33,000 for a college,plus dollar42,000 to pay 21 professors.The first Auburn veterinary class,with six students, graduated from atwo-year program of study.
