Have you reviewed your health insurance lately? If you have, I am sure you have noticed that all is not what it used to be. The fact is, nothing is like it used to be. Health care reform is sweeping this country. It is on the lips of almost every lawmaker, every person over 50, and definitely every physician. The truth is that health care accounts for 20% of the gross domestic product. That means that 1 dollar out of every 5 dollar dollars in the United States today is in a state of turbulence. In a2-week course titled "The Interagency Institute for Federal Health Care Executives," Veterinary Corps personnel studied the future of health care in America. I was troubled by how serious a problem we are facing, the health-maintenance organization (HMO)is taking over the health-care industry. But these new HMO are not the sweet, old, not-for-profit, "Kaiser-like" HMO we remember from the 1950s. These new HMO, such as Humana, US Health, and United Health Care, are responding to the public demand for lower cost health care, but they are doing it with Wall Street tactics.
