摘要

Despite advances that have been made in the medical management of pain, evidence suggests that pain is inadequately treated in some human and veterinary patients. In animal models and human clinical patients, successful management of pain results in beneficial effects on the stress response to surgery, function of the immune system, rate of cancer metastasis, intensity of chronic pain, and duration of hospital stay. Responses by veterinarians to surveys suggest that the benefits of analgesic use arewidely accepted. However, in human and veterinary medicine alike, pain management remains a challenge, particu-larjy in postsurgical and critically ill patients.
