Topics in Drug Therapy: Use of a eutectic mixture of lidocaine 2.5% and prilocaine 2.5% as a local anesthetic in animals

Lidocaine 2.5% and prilocaine 2.5% is a topically applied emulsion containing 25 mg of lidocaine/g and 25 mg of prilocaine/g that was developed as a local anesthetic for use in children. Lidocaine 2.5% and prilocaine 2,5% is frequently used in neonates and children for analgesia during IV catheterization, circumcision, vertebral paracentesis, and curettage of molluscum contagiosum. In adults, lidocaine 2.5% and prilocaine 2.5% has been used successfully for anesthesia of various cutaneous procedures, including preparation of split-thickness skin graft donor sites, minor genital surgery myringotomy and surgical debridement of leg ulcers in elderly patients.
