Pulsed dye laser lithotripsy for treatment of urolithiasis in two geldings.

Transendoscopic pulsed dye laser lithotripsy, which was successfully used to treat urolithiasis in 2 adult geldings, is described. The advantage of the technique is that it can be performed on standing horses with reduced surgical invasiveness and trauma to the urinary tract, compared with conventional surgery. The main disadvantages include the cost (dollar 1500/use, resulting in a total cost of treatment comparable with laparocystotomy), delay in treatment while making arrangements for the equipment tobecome available, and a requirement of performing an ischial urethrostomy for treating cystic calculi.
