Veterinary student indebtedness has been an issue of concern to the profession for several years. Rapidly escalating costs for a veterinary medical education make it improbable that all but a few will enter the profession free of significant debt. Interviews with students reveal that obtaining financial aid to complete their professional education, although important, is not the main problem. Students say their greatest challenge is to complete the professional curriculum without incurring crushing debt that defies repayment within a reasonable time, given the modest salaries accorded recent graduates.
