A 10-ryear-old Quarter Horse gelding was examined because of a fluctuant swelling over the interscapular region. The swelling was noticed by the owner 6 months earlier. The horse had been treated with hydro therapy, phenylbutazone, and topical application of dimethyl sulfoxide, which resulted in a slight decrease in the overall size of the swelling. Approximately 2 months prior to admission, the swelling was lanced by the referring veterinarian and a serosanguinepus fluid was drained; however, the swelling subsequently-returned to a third of its original size. The horse had not been exposed to cattle nor had it suffered any known trauma.
