摘要

A primary goal of sustainable architecture is to create buildings that support their intended uses, maintain a comfortable environment for occupants, and accomplish this with the minimal energy necessary. Human needs that must be addressed include thermal comfort, air quality, acoustics, access to daylighting, visual comfort, and visual connections between the interior and exterior. There is a strong, but complex relationship between meeting human needs and energy use. While some of these needs can be supported by energy-consuming artificial means, in most cases they can be better supported by natural methods through the building envelope. Numerous studies have explored the advantages that view and natural light provide for mental health, learning, and productivity(1). Additionally, recent studies on thermal adaptability have shaped new standards for naturally ventilated spaces with a broader comfort range(2). When ventilation, temperature management, and daylighting are provided through the building envelope, and when users have the ability to control these elements, studies have shown that they are more comfortable and require less energy(3).
