Special features of diamond abrasive finishing of ball-shaped ceramic workpieces

The paper deals with special features of kinematics, loading conditions, and tool wear in abrasive finishing of ball-shaped workpieces by free lapping. The author proposes analytic expressions which describe the dependence of the tool free rotation speed and tool wear on kinematic, geometrical, and force parameters of the process. A fundamentally novel method has been put forward for controlling the free lapping process by changing the tool loading conditions. The method provides an increase in efficiency and leveling the material removal over the workpiece profile.
