Working Together to Develop and React to Public Policy

In September of 2010,1 had the great honor of representing New York State (NYS) and the New York State Council of Health-system Pharmacists (NYSCHP) on the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) Public Policy Council during Policy Week. ASHP Policy Week is a great opportunity for pharmacy practitioners from all over the country in various types and levels of health system practice to discuss topics that are affecting us all. It is amazing to find how very similarly we are all affected on some issues and how differently on others. For example, we are all affected by the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry, but differently by state laws and regulations and variables that can occur as a result of the type of practice setting we work in, be it community practice verses an acute care setting or an urban practice setting verses a rural setting. No matter what the issue, however, it is very helpful to talk things through with others in our profession to get a new perspective or to commiserate on problems and collaborate on potential solutions.
