Diagnosis and Management of Cystic Neoplasms of the Pancreas: An Evidence-Based Approach

Pancreatic cystic lesions are now identified in approximately 1% of patients who undergo abdominal computed tomography scans, largely because of the ever-increasing application of diagnostic cross-sectional imaging in medical practice.1 Because it can be difficult to clinically discriminate between benign and malignant pancreatic cysts, this has historically represented a substantial clinical problem. Given the frequent occurrence of diagnostic uncertainty and the potentially lethal consequences of delayed recognition of malignant disease, some have advocated surgical resection for all patients with presumed cystic neoplasms.
