Surgical education: foundations and values.

As I examined the archives of the Southern Surgical Association in preparation for this address, I was surprised to learn that our various Presidents only rarely dealt with surgical education, even though the continuing education of surgeons was the motivating factor in the minds of our founders, Drs William and John Davis, in 1887. Only 9 of 118 earlier addresses have had this focus, presented every 10 to 15 years, and appropriate to their times. Because many changes in the structure of surgical education have occurred in recent years, some good and some questionable, I chose to focus on this subject.
