Minimally invasive colorectal resection outcomes: short-term comparison with open procedures.

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is considered the gold standard for gallbladder disease and antireflux operations worldwide. With the promise of smaller incisions, less pain, fewer wound and systemic complications, and faster recovery, minimally invasive techniques have been applied to virtually all surgical procedures, including colorectal surgery. More than a decade after the first laparoscopic colon resections, minimally invasive colorectal operations represent a minority of colorectal operations. One possible explanation for failure to adopt minimally invasive procedures for colorectal conditions were concerns about port-site recurrence and 5-year survival after MIS for excision of colorectal malignancy, but these were resolved with the results from two large, mul-ticenter, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in 2004: the Colon Cancer Open or Laparoscopic Resection and Clinical Outcomes of Surgical Therapy Study Group trials.
