The Massachusetts Health Care Reform Plan

For one issue, this column is not a look at Washington but at a state government, namely, that of Massachusetts (perhaps, for a month, "Beacon Hill Watch").The Bay State has been hogging the news lately, and for good reason. In April 2006, the state legislature approved a plan to provide health insurance for all the state's citizens.What a day! On April 12, the bill was signed into law by Gov Mitt Romney (R, Mass) at Faneuil Hall in Boston, beneath portraits of Revolutionary War heroes, accompanied by a fife and drum corps, under the watchful eye of Democratic senator Ted Kennedy and local politicians, all beaming about their role in making their state the first with universal health insurance.
