Teaching Physician Compliance

Although initiated more than a decade ago, the Physicians at Teaching Hospitals audits remain fresh in the minds of many academic physicians and serve as a stark reminder to all of us who practice-and bill-at teaching institutions that resident supervision requirements cannot be taken lightly [1]. As part of the Physicians at Teaching Hospitals audits, the Office of Inspector General scrutinized the billing practices of several large academic centers and alleged inadequate supervision, and hence improper billing, by attending physicians for services performed by their residents. The first two audits resulted in highly publicized multi-million dollar settlements by two prestigious Philadelphia institutions and forever changed the academic medical center billing landscape.
