Developed by the American Medical Association, Current Procedural Terminology~R (CPT) codes are the present basic formalism used to report the work performed on behalf of patients by physicians, nonphysicianhealth care providers, and facilities. A 5-digit numerical code is used to describe a particular patient service or procedure. In radiation oncology, the codes associated with medical physics and dosimetry begin with 773. There is normally a professional physician component and a technical component for each code for the purpose of reimbursement. However, CPT code 77370, special medical radiation physics consultation, is a technical-only code. To use it properly requires knowledge of appropriate medical physics work scenarios and some work effort. The identification of some eligible circumstances arising from the practice of medical physics and fostering the proper use of CPT code 77370 are the purposes of this column.
