Brachytherapy is a critical component in the management of many neoplasms and has undergone a renaissance in the past 15 years, first with permanent seed implants for prostate cancer in the 1980s [1] and most recently, breast brachytherapy [2,3]. Breast cancer management is on the verge of a major paradigm shift. For appropriately selected patients-those with tumors less than 3 cm in size with negative margins and negative axillary lymph nodes-a 5-day course of brachytherapy appears to yield equivalent local control to a 6-week course of external beam radiation [3].
