A fundamental distinction exists between the medical and legal professions with regard to the collection of facts and the drawing of conclusions on the basis of those facts. Physicians have been educated to use the "scientific method": seek all information, pro and con, on the specific subject or problem being investigated, and then formulate the most objective and unbiased conclusion possible. Attorneys, on the other hand, are advocates in an adversarial system whose duty is to zealously represent the interests of their clients. As such, attorneys are educated to seek only those facts that support their clients or positions, ignoring or discarding those that do not.
